Let’s be honest—every children’s ministry leader dreams of hearing kids say, “I can’t wait for church!” A fun, engaging Sunday morning doesn’t just magically happen, though. It takes some planning, a whole lot of creativity, and a sprinkle of that Sunday morning magic (a.k.a. coffee and prayer).

In this post, we’re sharing five simple ways to create a Sunday experience kids won’t want to miss—one that gets them excited to come back and hungry to learn more about Jesus every single week.

1. Start with a Warm Welcome

The first few moments on Sunday morning set the tone. A warm, friendly atmosphere helps kids feel safe and excited to be there.

  • Greet kids by name with enthusiastic volunteers.
  • Encourage leaders to learn fun facts about kids and bring them up in conversation.
  • Play upbeat, welcoming music in the background.

💡 Tip: Make parents feel welcome too! A confident drop-off leads to a better experience for everyone.

2. Make the Teaching Interactive

Kids learn best when they are actively involved in the lesson. The more you can get them participating, the more they’ll remember and apply what they learn. Consider:

  • Hands-on activities: Use crafts, object lessons, or games to make Bible stories come to life.
  • Interactive storytelling: Engage kids in the story by asking questions, letting them act out scenes, or using visual aids like props or puppets. Or better yet, use GO! Curriculum. We use a different interactive storytelling method every 4-5 weeks.

💡 Tip: Keep lessons short and to the point, with lots of interaction and movement. Kids’ attention spans are short, so make every moment count.

3. Create a Fun and Engaging Environment

A vibrant, playful space draws kids in and keeps them excited.

💡 Tip: Keep the space clean and organized to avoid distractions. Kids should feel excited to be in a space that’s both fun and tidy.

4. Encourage Relationships and Community

One of the most powerful parts of a kid’s Sunday morning experience is the relationships they build. Create an environment where kids feel connected to their peers, leaders, and the church as a whole:

  • Small group time: Teach your volunteers that small group is a time for them to listen, not just talk. The role of a leader is to facilitate conversation and learning, not to dominate it.
  • Leader relationships: Ensure your leaders are actively building community with the kids.
  • Group prayers: Encourage kids to pray for each other, creating a sense of community and spiritual growth.

💡 Tip: Make sure every child feels known and valued—relationships are the secret sauce.

5. Finish Strong with Fun and Memorable Wrap-Ups

The way you end your Sunday morning service is just as important as how you begin. A memorable, fun wrap-up will help kids leave with excitement and anticipation for the next week. Here’s how you can finish strong:

  • Recap the lesson: Use a fun activity, such as a quiz, game, or brief skit, to review the day’s teaching.
  • Reward system: Offer small rewards for kids who participated or learned something new (stickers, certificates, etc.).
  • Dismissal time: Ensure the transition out of class is smooth and positive, with leaders expressing excitement for the kids’ return.

💡 Tip: A high-energy send-off helps kids remember the fun—and the message—all week long.
