I know, I know…
How can we already be talking about “back-to-school” when it seems like summer just started.
Well, ready or not, here it comes!
The good news is that the back-to-school rush is one of the best opportunities of the year to re-engage families and rebuild momentum with your volunteer team.
But you have to be ready for it.
Here are five things you can do now to prepare.
1. Give Families a Reason to Come Back
Don’t assume families will automatically return when school starts.
They might. But they also might need a little nudge.
Create a clear “welcome back” moment for your ministry. It doesn’t have to be a massive event involving seventeen inflatables, a petting zoo, and your senior pastor sitting in a dunk tank.
Although…I would attend that.
It could be as simple as a fun theme Sunday, a family event, a new teaching series, or a special kickoff weekend. The goal is to give families something specific to anticipate.
Then communicate it everywhere: email, text, social media, parent handouts, and personal invitations.
Don’t just say, “Children’s ministry is still happening.”
Say, “You don’t want to miss what’s coming next.”
2. Personally Reach Out to Missing Families
Pull your attendance records and look for families who have quietly disappeared over the summer.
Then reach out.
Not with guilt.
Not with, “We noticed you haven’t been to church in 11 weeks, 3 days, and 7 hours.”
That’s creepy.
Instead, send a simple text:
“Hey! We’ve missed seeing your family this summer. I hope you’ve had a great one! We’ve got some exciting things coming up this fall, and I’d love to see you guys again.”
A personal invitation is incredibly powerful.
People want to know they were noticed. They want to know they were missed. And sometimes, all they need is a reminder that there’s a place for them.
3. Re-Recruit Your Volunteers
Yes, I said re-recruit.
Even the volunteers who are already on your team.
Summer has a way of disrupting routines. People travel. Schedules change. Some volunteers disappear into the wilderness and are never heard from again.
Before fall begins, reconnect with your team.
Remind them why their role matters.
Don’t just send an email that says, “Here’s the September schedule.”
Cast vision again.
Tell them stories of life change. Remind them that they’re not filling a hole in a schedule — they’re helping kids know and follow Jesus.
People rarely get excited about filling a 10:30 classroom opening.
They can get excited about changing a child’s life.
4. Make Your First Few Weeks Really Good
You only get one chance to make a first impression.
Unless you’re in children’s ministry.
Then you get another chance every August.
Families are resetting their routines and deciding what will be part of their schedule for the coming school year. That means the first few weeks of fall matter.
A lot.
Walk through your ministry as if you were a brand-new family:
- Is check-in clear?
- Are volunteers ready and welcoming?
- Are classrooms clean and inviting?
- Are the lessons engaging?
- Are kids having fun?
- Do parents know what their children are learning?
You don’t need perfection.
But you should be intentional.
5. Host a “Volunteer Draft Day”
Instead of another desperate recruitment announcement from the stage, turn it into something fun.
Set up ministry “teams,” let current volunteers recruit people they know, and create a short-term four-week serving opportunity.
People are far more likely to try serving alongside someone they already know than respond to, “We urgently need six adults in preschool.”
BONUS: Start with a Curriculum Kids Love
Want families to come back week after week? Give kids a reason to ask their parents to bring them.
An engaging curriculum can create incredible momentum in the fall. When kids are having fun, volunteers love teaching, and parents see their kids growing in faith, everybody wins.
That’s exactly what GO! Curriculum was built to do. GO! combines ridiculously fun, interactive lessons with a solid discipleship strategy that helps kids move from learning God’s Word to living it out and making it personal.
If you’re ready for a fresh start this fall, give GO! a try.
