The Secret to Keeping Kids Engaged

If you’ve ever taught a room full of kids, you already know something:

Attention is fragile.

Kids can go from fully engaged… to rolling on the floor for no apparent reason… in about 30 seconds.

So what’s the secret to keeping kids engaged in church?

It’s actually pretty simple.

Stop talking at kids. Start involving them.

Kids stay engaged when they feel like they’re part of what’s happening instead of just listening to it.

Here are three things that make a huge difference:

1. Interactive Storytelling
Instead of just telling the Bible story, invite kids into it. Not just some of them…ALL of them! GO! literally has DOZENS of interactive storytelling methods built into it. (You can see the methods we’re using for elementary in ’26-’27 right here. And for preschool right here.) When kids participate in the story, they’re no longer passive listeners—they’re experiencing the story as it unfolds.

2. Movement
Kids aren’t wired to sit still for long stretches of time. Simple moments of movement— standing up, acting something out, responding with motions, or moving around the room — can instantly bring the energy back. Movement keeps bodies active and minds engaged.

3. Discussion
Some of the best learning happens when kids talk. Ask questions. Let them share their thoughts. Give them a chance to connect the story to their own lives. Even short conversations with a small group leader can turn a lesson into something personal and meaningful.

When you combine storytelling, movement, and discussion, the lesson stops feeling like a lecture…

…and starts feeling like an experience.

That’s one reason GO! curriculum is designed the way it is. The lessons are intentionally built around interactive moments that invite kids into the story, keeping them engaged while helping them remember what they learn.

Because when kids are engaged, they’re not just paying attention.

They’re building a faith that sticks.
